| Hoping to curb record-high foreclosure rates across the country and further stabilize housing markets, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island) introduced new legislation Wednesday aimed at keeping more families in their homes and protecting communities against the deterioration brought on by still-skyrocketing mortgage defaults. Reed and the bills three democratic co-sponsors say foreclosure rates continue to rise at alarming rates, and they want to hold lenders accountable for providing relief to troubled homeowners. Anticipated home sales have increased for seven straight months, the longest upward run since the National Association of Realtors (NAR) began its pending sales index series back in 2001. NAR's chief economist agrees with many other market observers, though, that first-time buyers are rushing to put pen to paper to beat the deadline for the $8,000 tax credit. This run could very easily result in inflated pending sales numbers that don't make it to the closing desk in time. The first two of nine potential funds to invest in toxic assets with government support have been closed after raising just over $1 billion in equity from private sources, the Treasury Department said. Treasury is matching the $1.13 billion equity with its own equity and will provide 100 percent debt financing for the full amount, to make a total of $4. First American CoreLogic is now guaranteeing that its newly patented mortgage fraud technology will uncover at least twice as much fraud as competitors' systems, and save clients twice the cost of its solution, or the fees for the trial test period will be reimbursed.
