The United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring is no longer on the distant horizon; it is just three short months away on Wednesday, September, 22, 2010.  This seems like plenty of time to plan an event, but this community-wide experience has grown tremendously in the last 19 years.  Last September, more than 2,500 volunteers made a difference throughout Charlottesville, Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson.  The most challenging aspect of Day of Caring planning is ensuring that there are enough meaningful, impactful projects for all the volunteers.

Everyone knows that summer is a busy time and big ideas get lost with the season’s distractions. However, nonprofits and schools need to register their projects NOW so that volunteer teams can select their projects in August. Nonprofit agencies and schools throughout the planning district are encouraged to submit as many projects as they can realistically manage.

Nonprofits and schools should keep in mind that the Day of Caring is about more than planting a tree, painting a wall or visiting with a client on that one day in September.  By submitting projects for the Day of Caring, agencies are opening themselves to a world of possibilities: new partnerships with local business, new volunteers for long-term projects, new donors to support their missions.  Taking some time now to develop projects is an investment in an agency’s future, while getting a few needed items crossed off the wish list.

The United Way has created a Project Development Toolkit to help agency and school staff evaluate current needs and identify ways that Day of Caring volunteers can address those needs.  We’re here to make the process easy and we’re eager to work with nonprofits to help identify projects.
