Update on My Parents Construction of Waterfront Home at Kerr Lake

On August 15th, 2012 I wrote an article titled .  As you probably gathered, this article was about my parents purchase of land in Mecklenberg County and the construction of their new home that was ensuing.  Six weeks later, I have some new photos, taken almost weekly, with which to update you.  The home is being build by Steve Boetele, owner of Absolute Contracting.  So, here we go:

The projected finish date is Ocotber 19th, 2012.  Less than 3 months after closing (clsoing was on July 23rd, 2012)!!!  Can't wait to help my parents move in :)

In case you missed the first article, I have linked it at the top of the page and copied it below, this way you can see it coming together from vacant land all the way through construction!!!

The mission:Find property with access to water for my parents, that is affordable and close to good medical facilities.

Picture of John H Kerr Dam
After months of talking, debating, leisurely looking, and daydreaming, one destination stood above the rest - Kerr Lake / Buggs Island Lake on the Virginia side, near Clarksville in Mecklenberg County. The picture on the right is of the John H Kerr Dam. This area offers beautiful scenery, lots of water (a must have for mom) and privacy were the main draws to this area. Now, just to find the right existing home or building lot.

The Agent:
To find the property, we enlisted the services of a local agent, Karin Kuhn of RE/MAX Perspective at Buggs Island. Remember, Real Estate is local, despite what you read in national papers or on TV, its local. Sure, anyone can write a contract in any part of the state(s) they are licensed in, but is that the right thing? In my opinion, no. We couldn't have found a better person to assist my parents with this major decision. Being a Real Estate Agent myself, I can not begin to tell you how much my family and I appreciated the number of hours Karin spent with us in person, by phone, and email, keeping us totally informed every step of the way - morning and night. She showed extraordinary professionalism and we could not have had better support. The personal attention and direction she provided helped to keep us focused over several weeks. We do not hesitate to recommend her services to other potential clients for anything in the Lake Kerr and Buggs Island area. She is also licensed in North Carolina! If you are looking for anything in this area, she is the one to help you, her information is below:

Like most buyers, my parents wanted to see everything. After viewing a number of resale houses, and vacant lots with Karin, a decision was made:

Land Purchased:
Lot 134 Section 8D Roanoke
Merifield Acres - waterfront property on Lake Kerr

View from the dock off the property

After deciding on this lot, my parents needed a plan to build a new home. They spoke with Karin, neighbors, other locals and met with several builders. There was one that stood above the rest, in both affordability and the very high praises he was receiving from past clients. Thus, a builder was chosen.

The Builder:
Steve Boelte
Company: Absolute Contracting
Website: www.absolutecontracting.net
Email: sboelte@msn.com
Office: 434-374-2774
Fax: 434-374-2722

Within minutes of the closing being finalized on July 23, 2012, Steve, and his team from Absolute Contracting, were on site and knocking down trees, cutting in the driveway and getting the construction process underway. Within the first couple days, the lot was clear and the basement was dug in.

Days after getting the picture of having the basement dug in, we receive more photos of the materials for the basement, and the basement foundation being completed:

Keep in mind, closing happened on 07/23/2012 and the following photos will be of the picture update from 8/10/2012 - a short two and a half weeks after closing! I used Slideshare for this one, it was easier than saving all photos individually and loading, so I embedded the Slideshare doc and you can scroll down on the right hand side.

This home is progressing very quickly. My parents go down at the end of the week to determine where outlets are going to go, and start to visualize where to put the furniture! Here are the pictures that were received this morning, August 15, 2012. Again, I used Slideshare to get the document uploaded. Almost under roof within 30 days! They have 8 more days since our July 23rd closing, will they make it? Barring weather, I think so.

Seeing how that is the update from today, I will be bringing you more updates until the house is completed, highlighting every step of the way. What an amazing process - my parents totally deserve this and I can't wait to help them move in :) As the last photo of this post, here is the one what was just received from the builder:
